Mission Statement

The Education and Outreach Committee of the Guitar Society of Toronto was formed in 2008 to enrich Toronto’s cultural life by providing educational support for teachers, performance opportunities for students, a meeting place for aficionados, free community concerts for schools and hospitals, and free concert tickets for deserving community members. These goals will be achieved through eight specific programmes.

Student Recital Series

The Society holds four student recitals each year. All recitals are held at the recital hall of the Briton House Retirement Center located at 720 Mt. Pleasant Rd. This venue features excellent acoustics, a large stage, plush seating and an elegant atmosphere. Each recital showcases a different strand of classical guitar student performer:

(a) children and young people up to the high school level
(b) the Rising Stars Concert, comprising advanced players from RCM grade 8 and above.
(c) adult performers
(d) the Guitar Orchestra Gala, featuring high school and community guitar orchestras.

The Guitar Society of Toronto welcomes all amateur guitarists in the GTA to participate in these recitals which are presented free of charge for both performers and audience members.

If you or a student would like to participate in one of our recitals please contact the coordinator at: pfeely@guitarsocietyoftoronto.com

The Julie Jiggs Outreach Residency and Concert Series

This programme was established with the generous support of the Julie Jiggs Foundation. It provides an aspiring community guitarist a concert tour performing for some of our community's most needy and impressionable people. Performing venues include hospitals, retirement homes, hospitals, and schools. Although the recitals are presented free of charge to the organization, the performer is paid a modest stipend by the Society. The performer gains invaluable performance experience while the audience is given the opportunity to enjoy the beauties of the classical guitar.

If you would like to sponsor this series, be considered as a residency performer, or know of an organization which would benefit from a concert, please contact the coordinator at msavona@guitarsocietyoftoronto.com

The Guitar Society of Toronto Orchestra

The community orchestra seeks to enhance the musical education of all guitarists while at the same time offering a vehicle to meet new friends and make music together. If you own a classical guitar, can read music and are looking to play music with others, this group is for you. The orchestra begins in September, has recitals in the winter and the spring, and meets every other Sunday in downtown Toronto for two hours.

If you would like to join, help sponsor, or host a recital, please contact the director at: sgray@guitarsocietyoftoronto.com

The Pre-Concert Junior Performers Programme

The Society is committed to supporting young guitarists in our community and we can think of no better way than allowing them to share the stage with some of the world's greatest performers. This programme has talented students up to high school age perform one or two short pieces (5-7 minutes) before each of our professional series concerts.

If you have a student you would like to recommend please contact the coordinator at: pfeely@guitarsocietyoftoronto.com

The Urban Outreach Programme

The Guitar Society of Toronto provides free tickets to each of its International Professional Artist Concerts so that underprivileged members of the Toronto community are able to attend.

If you or your organization would like to sponsor this programme or if you know of an organization or individuals who would benefit from this programme, please contact the coordinator at sgray@guitarsocietyoftoronto.com

The Classroom Guitar Educators Advocacy Programme

The Guitar Society of Toronto is pleased to partner with classroom guitar music educators who have questions concerning guitar related issues such as starting a classroom guitar programme, acquiring pedagogically effective classroom guitar resources, obtaining classroom guitar advocacy materials, and sponsoring outreach concerts in their school. The aim of this programme is to provide resources for educators who are interested in starting a guitar programme at their school, and to support those educators who already have vibrant programmes.

For more information please contact pfeely@guitarsocietyoftoronto.com

The Guitar in the Schools Programme

The Society is thrilled to be partnering with the Toronto Board of Education to establish a classroom guitar programme in one selected school. The pilot programme will place an experienced guitar instructor in a classroom twice a week where he or she will teach students to play the guitar in a orchestral format. Guitars and instruction will be provided free of charge to the designated school.

If you would be interested in supporting this initiative financially, or if you have a classical guitar that you would like to donate please contact the coordinator at pfeely@guitarsocietyoftoronto.com
